Photographs are an essential and exciting visual form of communication, forming a significant part of everyday life across the world. It is estimated that around 1.4 trillion photos were taken in the last year. The image has become the most widely used international language, and the ability to communicate concise visual statements that engage audiences is at the heart of our teaching and professional practice.


The Greater Manchester Centre for Photography (PhotoBoltonUni), based at The University of Bolton, offers you a BA (Hons) Photography course with opportunities to pursue a unique pathway of visual self-discovery and the freedom to explore your own interests. Supported by our industry-experienced tutors and technicians, and developed in conjunction with a professional industry panel, our course offers a supportive, market-aware environment, in which you can explore and specialise in a variety of photographic genres such as editorial, commercial, advertising,travel, portraiture, architectural, landscape, nature, fine art and more.

You will hear from industry experts during guest lectures, have the opportunity to work on placements, live briefs, and commissions. Our industry links will not only enrich your learning experience,but will also provide you with invaluable ‘insider’ information and employment opportunities. We offer a fully integrated programme of practical and theoretical knowledge that builds confidence and skills, leading to a stimulating career in this dynamic industry.


On this course you will:

  • Learn how to use digital DSLR, Phase One digital backs on Medium and Large Format cameras and workflow.
  • Develop visual literacy and researching skills around photography.
  • Modules will use the in-house professional photographic studios.
  • Research into the history and theory of Photography.
  • You will be taught using industry specific software such as Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Capture One.
  • Engage with industry professionals both in the classroom an on industry-based briefs.
  • Work with film cameras 35mm, Medium and Large format.
  • The photographic darkroom and how to print using silver-based chemicals.
  • Entrepreneurship and the insider view of the photographic industry. 
  • Promote the necessary transferable skills to assist you in determining a professional and postgraduate future.
  • You will have the opportunity to work on the production of an annual magazine and undertake organised UK and overseas trips       (additional costs may apply).
  • Develop concepts and ideas through in-depth research processes and experimentation.
  • You will also complete fully assessed work placements.
  • Our final year career development module prepares you for the transition from graduation to full-time work.
